John and Demis are buried in Ponemah Cemetery, Westchester Society, Colchester. The names of his children are taken from his will dated November 12, 1824 (CPR V.9, P. 138--#561 Col., on deposit at the Hartford State Library) In it he leaves one-third of his estate to hes wife Demis. No other identification or date of marriage with Demis was found, nor for Lovina Carrier, who had a son Epaphroditus Born January 25, 1781 who died on July 1, 1784. This record points to the possibility that Lovina was a first wife. John's son Epsphroditus, however, did not die on July 1, 1784. It is recorded that Lovina bought a house in Westchester March 8, 1790 and sold it April 14, 1794, which precludes the idea that it was Lovina who died on July 1, 1784. There is no further record of her in Colchester. If she was John's first wife and living in 1794, then she must have been the mother of all his children.
Mary was married to a Homstead or Olmstead before November 12, 1824, the date of her father's will. The name is given on his will as Homstead, but this name is unfamiliar, whereas Olmstead is a common one.
Colchester records say he married Mary Waton* / Waters 7-21-1762. Celeste Pember Hazen's ms. gives her name as Mary Watrous. No further identity was found on either of these names, however, family records collected by his Great-Great Grandson, William H. Whitehill around 1900 gives her name as Mageret Woolcott, both from New London County, Conn. In the Colchester records the children are registered as children of Thomas and Mary. They resided in the Marlborough section of Colchester. Thomas and Mary are buried in Marlborough Cemetery No. 2. There are two Colchester entries identical except for the given names.
1) Mary, wife of Thomas Carrier died 7-26-1820, age 80.
2) Margeret, wife of Thomas Carrier died 7-26-1820, age 80.
Family records take priority, so it may be assumed that she preferred the name Mary to Magaret.
